Cambodia Demands at UN That Thailand Respect Peace Agreements and Allow Over 20,000 Citizens to Return Home

New York: Recent tensions and conflicts have severely undermined trust between Cambodia and Thailand, as Cambodia has firmly insisted on adherence to peace agreements and addressed humanitarian concerns regarding more than 20,000 affected citizens.

This position was articulated by H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly—held under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformations: A United Nations Delivering Results for All"—on September 26, 2026.  Speaking at this international forum, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that restoring trust must be grounded in concrete commitments, effective implementation, and good faith regarding all agreements—including the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement, the Fuxian Consensus, and, notably, the Joint Declaration of December 27, 2025, in which both sides pledged to renounce the threat or use of force and to respect the international border demarcation.

At the same time, His Excellency highlighted the importance of immediately resuming the Joint Commission's border survey and demarcation work to resolve outstanding issues and establish a clear border line in accordance with international law. Furthermore, humanitarian concerns remain a critical priority; over 20,000 Cambodian citizens are still unable to return to their homes due to continued occupation and obstruction by Thai military forces—a situation consistent with the UN Special Rapporteur’s assessment that they are entitled to the right to return home.
